What is a Breadboard?
A breadboard is a plastic board with rows of interconnected metal clips underneath. You push component leads and jumper wires into the holes to build circuits without soldering. The standard 830-tie 'full-size' board has two power rails and 63 numbered rows.
How the connections work
The middle rows (a–e and f–j) are connected horizontally in groups of 5. The two side rails (+ and −) run vertically. A trench in the middle isolates the two halves so you can plug ICs across it.
Tips that save hours
- Always wire GND to both side rails and jumper them together
- Keep component leads short — long leads act as antennae
- Use short solid-core wires rather than pre-cut jumpers for a clean look
- Never use a breadboard for currents above ~500 mA — the internal clips get hot
