Nothing teaches electronics like actually building something. Textbooks explain the theory, but the moment a relay clicks, a robot moves, or a sensor triggers an alert, everything falls into place. This list is a hands-on curriculum in itself — ten projects that every engineering, diploma and ITI student should build at least once during their studies.
For each project we cover what it does, the components you need, the difficulty level, the skills you will learn, and which Ampex India Development Kit is best suited to build it.
1. Smart Home Automation
- What it does: Control lights, fans and appliances from your smartphone using Wi-Fi. You can turn devices on or off from anywhere in the world.
- Required components: ESP32, 4-channel relay module, jumper wires, AC bulb or fan for demo, breadboard, power supply.
- Difficulty: Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Wi-Fi programming, MQTT or Blynk cloud, relay control, safe handling of AC loads, mobile app integration.
- Best kit: Intermediate Development Kit or Advanced Development Kit — both include the ESP32 and relay module needed.
2. Line Following Robot
- What it does: A small robot that follows a black line drawn on a white surface, using infrared sensors to steer left or right automatically.
- Required components: Arduino UNO, IR sensor array, L298N motor driver, two DC motors, chassis, wheels, battery pack.
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Digital input reading, motor control with PWM, basic control logic, mechanical assembly, PID tuning.
- Best kit: Intermediate Development Kit for the motors and driver, Starter kit for the Arduino UNO based control logic.
3. Gas Leak Detection System
- What it does: Detects LPG, methane or smoke in the surroundings and triggers a buzzer, LED and optional SMS alert.
- Required components: MQ-2 or MQ-5 gas sensor, Arduino UNO or ESP32, buzzer, LED, LCD display, breadboard.
- Difficulty: Beginner.
- Skills learned: Analog sensor calibration, threshold logic, LCD interfacing, real-world safety system design.
- Best kit: Advanced Development Kit — it includes the gas sensor along with buzzer and LCD.
4. Fire Detection System
- What it does: Detects flames and rising temperature, sounds an alarm and can optionally send a notification.
- Required components: Flame sensor, temperature sensor (LM35 or DHT11), buzzer, ESP32 or Arduino UNO, relay for a water pump (optional).
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Multi-sensor fusion, interrupt-based alerting, actuator control, safety-critical logic.
- Best kit: Advanced Development Kit — flame sensor, DHT and relay all included.
5. Smart Security System
- What it does: A PIR motion sensor detects movement in a room, triggers a buzzer or camera, and sends a notification to your phone.
- Required components: PIR sensor, ESP32, buzzer, LED, optional ESP32-CAM.
- Difficulty: Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Motion detection, Wi-Fi notifications, event-driven programming, low-power operation.
- Best kit: Advanced Development Kit — the PIR sensor and ESP32 are both included.
6. RFID Door Lock
- What it does: Only allows entry when a valid RFID card or tag is scanned, otherwise beeps and denies access.
- Required components: MFRC522 RFID reader, RFID tags/cards, servo motor or solenoid lock, buzzer, LCD, Arduino UNO.
- Difficulty: Intermediate.
- Skills learned: SPI communication, secure ID storage, servo control, user interface design on LCD.
- Best kit: Intermediate Development Kit — includes RFID module, servo and LCD.
7. Smart Irrigation System
- What it does: Reads soil moisture and automatically turns on a water pump when the soil is dry. Optionally reports data to a cloud dashboard.
- Required components: Soil moisture sensor, ESP32 or Arduino UNO, relay, small DC water pump, tubing, jumper wires.
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Analog sensor reading, threshold-based automation, actuator switching, IoT dashboard integration.
- Best kit: Intermediate Development Kit (soil sensor, relay and pump friendly) or Advanced Development Kit.
8. Temperature and Humidity Monitoring
- What it does: Continuously measures room temperature and humidity and displays them on an LCD, an OLED or a mobile dashboard.
- Required components: DHT11 or DHT22 sensor, ESP32 or Arduino UNO, LCD or OLED display.
- Difficulty: Beginner.
- Skills learned: Digital sensor libraries, real-time display update, data logging basics.
- Best kit: Starter Development Kit for the LCD version, Intermediate/Advanced for the cloud-connected version.
9. IoT Weather Station
- What it does: Combines temperature, humidity, pressure and light sensors, uploads the data to a cloud service and shows live charts on a web dashboard.
- Required components: ESP32, DHT22, BMP180, LDR, breadboard, cloud service (Blynk, ThingSpeak, Firebase).
- Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced.
- Skills learned: Multi-sensor integration, JSON APIs, cloud dashboards, HTTP/MQTT protocols, real-time visualisation.
- Best kit: Advanced Development Kit — includes ESP32 plus most of the sensors needed.
10. Motion Detection and Alert System
- What it does: Detects motion in a defined zone using PIR and ultrasonic sensors, records the event and triggers an alert.
- Required components: PIR sensor, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, ESP32, buzzer, LED, optional OLED display.
- Difficulty: Intermediate.
- Skills learned: Sensor fusion, distance measurement, event logging, alert system design.
- Best kit: Advanced Development Kit — has PIR, ultrasonic and ESP32 already included.
How to Use This List
You do not need to build all ten projects at once. A great approach for a full semester of learning is:
- Week 1-2: Temperature & Humidity Monitoring (project 8)
- Week 3-4: Gas Leak Detection (project 3)
- Week 5-6: Line Following Robot (project 2)
- Week 7-8: RFID Door Lock (project 6)
- Week 9-10: Smart Home Automation (project 1)
- Week 11-12: IoT Weather Station (project 9)
By the end of the semester you will have six live projects on your resume, a working understanding of both Arduino and ESP32, and enough confidence to design your own final-year project.
